I was born ten years after my parents met during the last days of 1944 in Holland. My father was a Sergeant billeted in Bjsterveld, serving in the East Lancashire regiment and Bjsterveld was my mothers home. She worked with Philips electronics in Eindhoven. From that time on my father and mothers tales of their courtship days during the final year and end of the war still mingles in my mind with those of my summer holidays as a youngster in the gardens and woods of Brabants.
Those days by and large, were halcyon summer days, arriving by ferry into the great blue grey, North Sea Port of Rotterdam before travelling under Holland's vast skies to Helmond. The area of Brabants was great fun and I and my brothers spent time exploring the canals, fields and woods alongside our Dutch friends. My Opa Jan Wolff, my Uncles Gerrit Wolff, Nico Wolff and Jan Wolff yunger and my father and mother were all keen on painting, drawing, as well as architecture. The evenings were often spent drawing the things that I had seen that day, the vast sky and the woods, the heath lands, endless dykes, canals, pastures, streets and churches. These watercolours reflect some of the colours and forms of the landscapes that I saw.
