Relatively unfrequented, the Lake District valley of Longsleddale is a wonderful place to be. A valley walk takes you to the summit of Gatescarth Pass. The upper reaches of the valley are impressive. The walled lane climbs gently for most of its length although it does steepen as you climb past Raven Crag. Alongside, the waters of the infant River Sprint cascade through a rocky cleft as they head towards the sea. Suitably refreshed continue north to the summit of Gatescarth Pass, getting your first sight of Mardale and Haweswater Reservoir. The valley offers a great starting place to paint the mix of light conditions that exist  between the valley meadows and the wild wandering air of the high fells. .

Vibrant Autumn: The colours of Catbells and Derwentwater in all their moods paint a picture of Adventure


Catbells Autumn splendour launches a storm of colours refusing to surrender to winters approach . St Herbert's Island Derwentwater After the storm fades its cast bronze light .  Causey Pike is one of the first fells to light up the morning above Derwentwater. This lovely painting builds the sense of adventures ahead today.hangs flat over Derwentwater. The birds are silent the only sound the dull swell swinging across the beach .

Paintings of the Lake District sweet Dales and valleys

The significance of being a National Park for the valleys and dales of the Lake district are undeniable. Farm walls houses farm houses,  barns are a feature of the winding lanes. lined by the best of trees. Add a backdrop of the high fells and crags to create a wonderful tapestry of views.


In Lakeland there is not a shortage of subject matter. Neither is there a shortage of mood as the four seasons pass through their  yearly cycle.

Painting the Lake District Fells.

The beauty of the lake District is undeniable wherever you may stand. The Lakeland Fells though have a poetry of their own that lends itself to the art of solitary wondering. Finding a quiet corner high above a valley. Contemplating the cloud drift over a distant lake. Or conversely pitting yourself against nature on a sharp ridge or ascending cold winter climb.


There is no shortage of subject matter and no shortage of mood as the four seasons pass through the year.

Paintings of the Lake District Tarns, Waters and Lakes

One of the persistant most pleasent views of the English lake District are its tarns waters and Lakes glimpsed close by below a steep rock busttress or in the distant through shaded trees nestling in deep valleys.


Throughout the 4 seasons they act as a mirrow to the high and low.

A Lakeland Commission .

Painting at the Lingholm Estate

Lingholm is the handsome large estate and house on the west shore of Derwentwater. It was the holiday home where Beatrice Potter spent seven summer holidays and where she wrote and illustrated many off her famous children's stories including Peter Rabbit. Lord Rochdale later transformed the site into its current form.


I was invited to paint two large triptychs for the Stone room. The Stone Room is a very large ornate oak panelled room in the main house. It has three huge mullion windows and a fireplace of Italian blue sandstone. The triptychs focus are the Fells that surround Derwentwater. The North Fells comprising Skiddaw, Blencathra, Causey Pike and Catbells. In the south I painted the Fells that make up the famous Jaws of Borrowdale.

We are following in the footsteps of landscape painters through the centurys and there are still viging scenes and their nuances left to pain
